Nepal + India | Cultures & Civilizations
Experience a 13-day journey through Nepal and India, following the major pilgrimage sites connected with the life and teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. Beginning in Kathmandu, the tour explores the valley’s rich Buddhist heritage, including Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Patan, Pharping, Kopan, and Namo Buddha. From ancient stupas and monasteries to sacred caves and hilltop pilgrimage sites, each destination offers a different insight into the living Buddhist traditions of Nepal.
The journey continues to Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, where Queen Maya Devi is traditionally believed to have given birth to him. Explore the sacred Lumbini Garden, Maya Devi Temple, Ashoka Pillar, monasteries, and other important sites before visiting Tilaurakot, associated with the ancient Shakya kingdom and Siddhartha’s early life. Lumbini remains one of the world's most important Buddhist pilgrimage destinations and provides a meaningful starting point for understanding the Buddha's journey.
Crossing into India, follow the Buddhist circuit through Shravasti, Kushinagar, Vaishali, Rajgir, Nalanda, and Bodhgaya. Discover ancient monasteries, stupas, archaeological remains, and places associated with important chapters of Buddhist history. In Bodhgaya, visit the Mahabodhi Temple and sacred Bodhi Tree, traditionally recognized as the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment. Continue to Kushinagar, associated with the Buddha's parinirvana, and explore Sarnath, where he delivered his first sermon and established the first Sangha.
The journey concludes in Varanasi, one of South Asia's oldest living cities, where you can experience its historic ghats, temples, narrow streets, and morning boat ride on the Ganges. By connecting the birthplace, enlightenment, first teaching, and parinirvana sites with other important Buddhist centers, this Nepal and India Buddhist circuit offers a comprehensive journey through the history, heritage, and living traditions of Buddhism.
